2v., plates . ill.. . fol... Not indigenous. Coats of arms emblazoned by Thomas Dowse or Dowze. Loosely inserted: clippings from dealer's catalogues, unrelated to provenance. Provenance: Nineteenth-century armorial bookplate: James Foster Wadmore 1863 [i.e. James Foster Wadmore, author of 'Some account of the Worshipful Company of Skinners of London' (1876) and 'Thomas Smythe of Westenhanger' (1887)]. Pencil notes on v. 1 title page, including Wadmore's note: "This Work is unique the severall shields and coats of arms were emblazoned by Francis Douce the celebrated hearald [sic] & antiquary who died in 1834. J. F. W. [i.e. Francis Douce (1757-1834), antiquary and book collector, though according to Norris this attribution is false]. Norris's note on flyleaf corrects similar statement in bookseller's catalogue clipping: 'No. Thos. Dowze . See Vol. II. pp. 44, 65 etc.' Vol. 2 p. 65 is indeed signed 'by Thos. Dowse, 39 Upper Charlotte St. Fitzroy Square.' Pencil note on title page verso: Examined. Bequeathed to the National Trust by Norman Norris (1917-1991). Affixed to v. 1 flyleaf Bookseller's catalogue entry for this copy, quoting price Đ45, with Norris's manuscript note: "Lowe Bros. Birmingham. This copy. Purchased NESN. 1964. Also inscribed in Norris's hand: Lowe 1964 ĐQR/-/-. [code for Đ45, assuming he paid price in catalogue].. Binding: Twentieth-century full morocco over boards; gilt fillets to form a panel; gilt spine title 'History of the County of Northampton'; sewn on five raised bands.
