Pencil note on vol. 1 front pastedown: 5 vols. calf 3 vols. bds [but only 5 vols. covering vols. 1-2, in leather, are present]. Vol. 1 is 1813 reissue. Pencil notes in: (1) vol. 1, part 1, p.85; (2) vol. 2, part 1, p.70 in the 3rd Earl’s hand [i.e. Philip Yorke, 3rd Earl of Hardwicke (1757-1834)]. Ephemera: label left between pp. 294-5 of vol. 1, part 2: Dorothy Eckford, (Pure White). Loosely inserted in front of vol. 2, pt. 1: Bye-laws with respect to waggons ... (Southampton ,1879?). Provenance: armorial bookplate (after 1754): Philip, Earl of Hardwicke. [i.e. Philip Yorke, 1st Earl of Hardwicke (1690-1764), created Baron Hardwicke, 1733, and Earl of Hardwicke, 1754. Also used in books acquired by his successors]. Binding: nineteenth-century sprinkled, polished over boards on five recessed cords, gilt spine tooling, tan spine labels, gilt rope tool around edges of covers, gilt tool on board edges, olive-green sprinkled edges. Vol. 2, part 1 has been rebacked; the original spine has been glued to a slip of paper left inside the front cover.
