Inherited by Lawrence's brother, Arnold Walter Lawrence (1900-1991), passed to Peggy Guido (1912-1994) and then to Michiel Hegener. Donated by Michiel Hegener, 2024. Binding: publisher's red cloth, gilt-lettered on upper board and spine.
Provenance
Donated by Mr Michiel Hegener, 2024. From the style of its binding and its similarity to other existing examples, it would appear that this second volume of the Walter Scott Publishing Company’s edition of Tolstoy’s War and Peace dates from around 1900, the year that T. E. Lawrence (Thomas Edward Lawrence, aka Lawrence of Arabia) was 12. The initials “T.E.L.” are written in Lawrence’s adult hand, suggesting he may have acquired it second-hand or marked it when his life became peripatetic. It is known to have been at Clouds Hill when Lawrence died in 1935, whereupon it devolved to Professor A. W. Lawrence, T. E. Lawrence’s younger brother, who in later life lived with the archaeologist, Peggy Guido. The donor was given it after the death of Peggy Guido in 1994, and presented it to the National Trust in 2024.
