Summary
Bibliographic description
3 pts. ([16], 379 [i.e. 179], [1]; [8], 211, [1]; [10], 117, [1] leaves) ; 8vo. Imperfect: part II only. Wanting leaves 8 (sig. A8, containing the sermons of Thomas Apostle), 26-28 (D2-4, sermons of St. Thomas a Becket), 56-59 (G8-H3, sermons of St. Gregory, Pope), and final leaf (DD4). Correct shelfmark: B.1.1: now boxed, is too big to fit there. Provenance: with manuscript marks to the text in at least two hands (1 C16, 1 ?C17), in pencil and ink, one probably in hand of Hannibal Gamon (1582?-1651), Rector of St. Mawgan. Various other marks and scribbles, including occasional crossing out of references to the Pope and Thomas a Becket. In ink on title page: "H:B:P:". Something scratched into foot of title page: nearly legible. In ink: on verso of title page (C16): "Thomas Phyllyppis"; leaves 102r & 117r (C16): "Rowland Brockan(?) est verus possessor ..."; leaf 150v a curse?; leaf 211v an injunction to return it to its owner (John? Phyllyppis?) if lost. Binding: sixteenth-century panel stamped calf, over wooden boards. Panel stamps (very worn), upper cover with legend: TOTA PULCRA ES AMICA MEA ET MACULA NON EST ... TERMACE -- cf. Oldham Bib 9 and Rel 6. One of the two panels bearing the name of R. Macé, and found by Oldham on editions printed between 1490-1537. Macé, père et fils were booksellers/binders in Caen, and the panels probably originated there, though they were used in England. Remains of clasps on fore-edge. Rebacked: new endpapers and pastedowns. Faint offset of text, from original (ms?) lining of spine, on front endpaper. Horizontal edge title on foot, in ink. Box (Pickwoad?).
