On v.1 flyleaf: nineteenth-century pencil notes, including a note of the death of Lord Sheffield [John Holroyd, Earl of Sheffield (1735-1821)]. Pencil inscription on v.1 pastedown: "Keane's" [i.e. J. Keane FitzGerald]. Bequeathed to the National Trust by Norman Norris (1917-1991). Forms part of a set with Gibbon's History of the decline and fall . (5.B.13-24) , v.1 of which is inscribed in Norris's hand: "Shalstone Manor Bucks 17/5 '44 Lot 602 Đ7-10. 17 vols.". Binding: Nineteenth-century full calf over boards; triple blind fillets and blind corner tools; gilt-rolled edges; spines elaborately gilt; green leather spine labels; sewn on five raised bands.
