Provenance: armorial bookplate, anonymous (not identified): argent, a chevron azure surmounted by a crescent between three roses; supporters two greyhounds reguardant proper, gorged with collar, tails coward; closed helm with demi-greyhound crest; mantling. Manuscript code beneath bookplate: "b2". Manuscript inscription just visible beneath front pastedown: "Ex bibliotheca Ludovici Martelli Rotomag. 1574" [i.e. Lodovico Martelli (fl. 1574), of Rouen] -- Cf. no. 879a in 'The Aldine Press: catalogue of the Ahmanson-Murphy Collection of books by or relating to the press in the library of the University of California' (Los Angeles, 2001), which has the same bookplate and inscriptions. Manuscript initial on front fly-leaf: "M." [i.e. catalogue code of John Mitchell (ca. 1685-1751), librarian to Sir Richard Ellys (1682-1742)]; with Mitchell's manuscript code at foot of leaf: "ις'." [i.e. iota stigma' = Greek number 16]. Manuscript codes on front fly-leaf: "(p) H" and "No. h217". Manuscript note in a very neat sixteenth-century hand (that of Martelli/Martel?) on verso of front fly-leaf: "Cœlius Rodígijn. antiq. lect. cap. 4. lib. 7. Eos Veró (inquit) / Qui peculiarius Insignitiusq[ue] poëtae vocitantur, / Quattuor Imprimis cognobiles faciu[n]t, metru[m] Heroïcum, / fabula allegorica, Historia, Dictio cu[m] dignitate, ac / heroïca, metro Imprimis accommoda, non ex trita, nec / depressa. / Idem Iufrà, cap. 6. Manuscript inscriptions on title page: "Coll B.K:" (at head of title page), "illustra Deus oculum" (between final line of title and printer's device), and "Stephanus Baluzius Tutelensis" (at foot of title page) [i.e. Étienne Baluze (1630-1718), librarian to Jean-Baptiste Colbert. Baluze's personal library was sold in 1719]. With manuscript marginal annotations in Latin and Greek and underscoring of text in the same hand as the note on the verso of the front fly-leaf. Manuscript inscriptions just visible beneath rear pastedown. Binding: sixteenth-century full limp vellum; sewn on five double cord supports; yapp edges; holes in covers for two pairs of ties (missing); spine cracked. Manuscript title in Greek on spine. Very faint manuscript notes and numbers on front cover.
