Ink “[S?]34] on titlepage. Annotations in Edward Browne’s hand in brown ink on flyleaf. Seventeenth-century annotations in pencil under Baron’s bookplate on pastedown [probably also Edward Browne]. Pencil underlinings and fists against text throughout. Provenance: Seventeenth-century manuscript signature on flyleaf [bisqued out] of Edward Browne [i.e. Edward Browne (1644–1708), physician and traveller; library sold at auction in 1711]. Armorial bookplate (small) on titlepage verso: John Lord Sommers Baron of Evesham [i.e. John, Lord Somers (1651-1716), Lord Chancellor]. Armorial bookplate (between 1733 and 1754): Philip Lord Hardwicke Baron of Hardwicke in ye County of Gloucester [i.e. Philip Yorke, 1st Earl of Hardwicke (1690-1764), created Baron Hardwicke, 1733, and Earl of Hardwicke, 1754]. Binding: Seventeenth-century sprinkled calf over boards on four raised bands, remains of gilt spine tooling, double blind fillet with inner rectangular compartment and cornerpiece design on covers, blind roll on board edges, marbled edges. Spine label missing. Old water stains at back of textblock.
