Plates 23-24 (of the earl of Essex by Hoppner, and of the earl and his sister as children, by Reynolds; both engraved by Charles Turner) replaced by brilliant large versions bound as frontispiece and before p.9 respectively; both with pencil annotations: "Private plate" (frontis. also "Proof"). Provenance: No ownership marks except Brownlow arms on binding (presumably = 1st earl Brownlow, who is not in list of subscribers; but his brother Henry Cockayne Cust subscribed to a small-paper copy). Binding: Heavy calf, gilt, with Brownlow arms on both boards. Binder's stamp on flyleaf: Bd by Nickisson 215 Regent St.
