[Sir Richard Colt Hoare (1758-1838), antiquarian, archaeologist and book collector; most of his books went to the British Museum; author of 'Description of the house and gardens at Stourhead, Wiltshire' (1800)]. Bequeathed to the National Trust by Norman Norris (1917-1991). Inscribed on flyleaf in Norris's hand: Stoke Edith Library. S. [i.e. Sotheby's] 23/6 48 Lot 602 Đ6 [Stoke Edith, Herefordshire, home of Foley family]. Also in Norris's hand: 'Presentation copy . Bound in cowhide'. Binding: Late nineteenth-century full brown leather binding over boards; triple gilt fillet to form a border; gilt roll-tooled inner border; gilt armorial shield centrepiece stamp with motto "Vigilantibus"; spine elaborately gilt, with title 'Gage's History & antiquities of Thingoe Hundred'; sewn on five double raised bands.
