Provenance: acquired by Sir Richard Ellys (1682-1742) at the Uilenbroek sale, Amsterdam, in 1729 (lot 740) for "13.10" (presumably Dutch gulden and stuivers). Manuscript former nineteenth or twentieth-century shelfmark in pencil on verso of front free endpaper: 15.E.13 (changed to read 15.C.13). Manuscript inscription on fly-leaf facing title page: "Federici Ceruti Veronensis dono Perillustri Divi D. Marci Antonij de Monte" [i.e. given to Federico Ceruti (1531-1611), classical philologist of Verona, by Marc' Antonio (or Marcantonio) da Monte, possibly a descendant of the humanist physician Giovanni Battista da Monte (1498-1551)]. Binding: nineteenth-century full brown goatskin; sewn onto three sewing supports; gold-tooled border on both covers of a roll pattern of linked S-shapes between a frame of two intersecting double fillets; gilt roll pattern along board edges; five raised bands on spine; gilt title, place and date of publication lettered directly onto spine; blind floral roll pattern at head and tail of spine. Gilt edges. Nonpareil marbled endpapers.
