Binding: French, late sixteenth-century or seventeenth-century full calf; sewn on five recessed cords; smooth spine; single gilt fillet border; gilt oval wreath centrepiece; gilt floral tool and fillets in panels on spine; brown leather title label on spine: 'Marliani Roma'; bookblock edges stained yellow; strips of binders' manuscript waste (vellum) used as strengthening guards visible beneath pastedowns. Fore-edge corners repaired in tan leather.
