Summary
Fireplace - similar to the one in Lord Wraxall's Sitting Room. Surround - mantel shelf, header and legs of Carrara marble comissioned in Venice in 1908. Mantel shelf has a recessed front edge with horizontal carved bands. Header is carved with mythical creatures at each end and two central panels carved with foliage and dragons either side of a heraldic shield. Legs in the form of two columns which support a butresses on either side, fixed to a marble base. The cast iron back and two sides panels of the grate are decorated with raised motifs depicting fountains, birds and foliage. The back panel is monogrammed with the initials; GG and VG each set encircled with a laural wreath. The large and ornate fire basket (NT11170) has scrolls at either end and a geometric design across the front. The fire basket has fire bricks at either side and is attached to two large ornate fire dogs by metal rods. The fire dogs, the RH one of which is damaged, are decorated with mythical figures. The fire basket has a metal base which holds an ash pan which doesn't appear to be original. The hearth is white marble with two rectangular and one triangular red decorative panels. A white marble collar surrounds the hearth.
