Summary
Print, engraving, The School of Athens (after Bernardino Nocchi after Raphael) by Giovanni Volpato (Angarano 1740 - Rome 1803). One of a set of five engravings by Volpato after Nocchi of Raphael's Sistine frescoes. Each scene is shown under a sculptural arch with an inscription in the left spandrel; 'Raphael Sanctius Pinx' and in the right spandrel; 'In Aedibus Vaticanis' inscribed underneath; 'PIO SEXTO PONT. MAX.'. d) A scene with a further inscription visible below; 'BONARUM ARTIUM RESTITUTORI AC VINDICI D.D.D.' It shows the Pope walking through triumphal arches.
