Summary
Sketchbook, 1850, Rome and the surrounding district, Cervetri [Cerveteri], Tivoli, Nepi, Subiaco, Assisi and elsewhere in Italy, including objects in museum and private collections, classical ruins, and architectural details, with a (fol. 6) copy of a vase painting by Exekias showing Achilles and Ajax playing dice, and b (fols. 18v-26) ground plan, views of and details from an Etruscan tomb at Cerveteri [the originals for plates for 'An Etruscan Tomb at Cervetri, the Ancient Caere'].’
Provenance
Bequeathed by Sir John Gardner Wilkinson (1797–1875) to Sir John Harpur Crewe, 9th Bt (1824–86), together with the rest of his library, sketchbooks and notes, and thence by descent; accepted, as part of the Calke estate, house and collection, by HM Government in lieu of inheritance tax and allocated to the National Trust, with the help of a grant from the National Heritage Memorial Fund, grants from the Historic Buildings Council and donations from the Harpur Crewe trustees, from an anonymous benefactor and from a public appeal, 1985.
