A late 19th Century purple writing case. It belonged to Sir Vauncey Harpur Crewe, his initials are on the front. Made by Jenner and Knewstub, London and called "The Elgin Wrting Case". The writing case is rectangular, flat and with a flap which comes from the back and fastens at the front, comes with a protective outer oil cloth case. The case itself has a handle at the top and a brass self lock on the front and two straps. Inside are four compartments which are concertinered to lie flat. The middle compartment contains a tray which pulls out and holds writing equipment: envelopes, paper, ruler, penknife, scalple, scissors, pencil, a case for ink and another for matches, a case for calling cards and another for small items and spaces to put stamps.
