Summary
A small mahogany travelling medicine chest, 19th Century, rectangular. Brass plaque on lid with a flat handle and engraved the intials 'E.N. Mosley'. Small keyhole and key beneath lid and a drawer at the bottom also with a brass plate and flat loop handle. Lined with red velvet. Inside the top are six compartments holding square glass bottles with glass stoppers. These are labelled 'Tincture of Iodine', 'Sweet Spirit of Nitre', 'Spirit of Sal Volatile', 'Spirit of Camphor', 'Tincture of Arnica' and 'Bi-carbonate of Soda'. Many of the bottles still contain liquid. Two larger compartments, one at either end, also for square bottles - only one remains labelled 'Rhubard and Soda mixture, Dose two tablespoons'. The other compartment contains Boric Lint, a compressed bandage and a small tin of Nigroid tablets. Drawer at the base of chest is also compartmentalised and has tiny square bottles containing 'Laudunum', 'Aspirin tablets', 'Essence of peppermint', 'Cascara sagrada tablets' and 'chlorate of potash tablets'. Lift-out section in drawer contains a small set of brass scales and two boxes of weights. Beneath this section is a tiny glass pestle and mortar and a knife.
