Summary
Mezzotint, John Manners, Marquess of Granby (1721-1770), engraved by James Watson (c. 1740-90) after Sir Joshua Reynolds PRA (Plympton 1723 - London 1792), sold by Ryland and Bryer (active 1765-72), c. 1766-70. A mezzotint after the full-length portrait of John Manners, Marquess of Granby, by Joshua Reynolds (Royal Collection Trust, RCIN 405894). The Marquess of Granby in the uniform of a colonel of the Royal Regiment of Horse Guards, his left arm resting on the flank of his bay horse which is held by an unidentified groom wearing a turban. The Battle of Villinghausen (1761) generally assumed to be depicted in the background. Lettering below portrait flanks Manners' coat of arms, 'Right Hon. John Manners, Marquis of Granby/ One of His Majesties most honourable privy council, Colonel of His Majesties royal regiment of Horse Guards, Commander in Chief of his Majesties Forces and Master General of the Ordnance etc.'.
