A gold signet ring, dating from around 1860, with a shield-shaped banded agate seal stone, engraved with three crests, on a carved gold mount.
Full description
This ring was recorded in the 1886 inventory of the family jewel case as a ‘shield shaped sardonyx ring engraved with crest on, the stone picked up by me GC [Georgiana Crewe] on the beach at Albro’, Suffolk in 1848’ (Derbyshire Record Office, D2375/H/F/2/27).
Provenance
Ring, c. 1860. Recorded in the 1886 inventory of the family jewel case as a ‘shield shaped sardonyx ring engraved with crest on, the stone picked up by me GC [Georgiana Crewe] on the beach at Albro’, Suffolk in 1848’. Thence by descent to Henry Harpur-Crewe (1921-91) and transferred with Calke Abbey and its contents to the National Trust by the Treasury in lieu of Capital Transfer Tax in 1985 with an endowment provided by the National Heritage Memorial Fund.
