Summary
A gold ring, dating from around 1865 . The ring is bezel set with a polished octagonal-shaped turquoise in an 18-carat gold, plain polished, signet-style mount. The ring is contained in a ring box by Hunt & Roskell.
Full description
This is probably the 'Large Turquoize ring' given to Sir John Harpur Crewe (1824-86) by his wife, Georgiana Stanhope Lovell, Lady Crewe (1824-1910) as recorded in the 1886 inventory of the family jewel case (Derbyshire Record Office, D2375/H/F/2/27).
Provenance
Ring, probably given to Sir John Harpur Crewe (1824-86) by Georgiana Stanhope Lovell, Lady Crewe (1824-1910) and described in the 1886 inventory of the family jewel case as a ‘Large Turquoize ring’. Thence by descent to Henry Harpur-Crewe (1921-91) and transferred with Calke Abbey and its contents to the National Trust by the Treasury in lieu of Capital Transfer Tax in 1985 with an endowment provided by the National Heritage Memorial Fund.
