A gold stick pin dating from around 1859. The top is mounted with a coiled gold serpent encircling a banded onyx bead.
Full description
This is probably the 'onyx bead and serpent pin; purchased by Sir John Harpur Crewe, 9th Bt. (1824-86) from Abud & Collingwood for £10.1.0 on 25 May 1859 (Derbyshire Record Office, D2375/E/A/6/2/211). It was described in the 1886 inventory of the family jewel case within an ‘old silver apple scoop case containing pins… 1 onyx & gold serpent' (Derbyshire Record Office, D2375/H/F/2/27).
Provenance
Stick pin, probably the 'onyx bead and serpent pin' purchased by Sir John Harpur Crewe, 9th Bt. (1824-86) from Abud & Collingwood on 25 May 1859 for £10.1.0. Recorded in the 1886 inventory of the family jewel case within an ‘old silver apple scoop case containing pins… 1 onyx & gold serpent'. Thence by descent to Henry Harpur-Crewe (1921-91) and transferred with Calke Abbey and its contents to the National Trust by the Treasury in lieu of Capital Transfer Tax in 1985 with an endowment provided by the National Heritage Memorial Fund.
