Summary
Necklace, part of Egyptian Revival gold parure, c.1870. Necklace of monumental construction, the upper section composed of a row of Egyptian varicoloured agate, polished torpedo-shaped beads with elongated gold double-linked bars in between, the centrepiece designed as the stylised mask of an Egyptian Pharaoh with carved green jasper face in a bright yellow gold locket-back frame decorated with beadwork, raised vertical bars and twisted wirework. Suspended below is a long Egyptian agate bead and gold chain with further, smaller, matching locket-back Pharaoh mask finial and three agate and gold drops with shackle finials, together with a chatelaine fitting, probably for suspending a watch (now missing). The principal mask section engraved on the back 'Wadee Halfa March 1870'.
Provenance
Calke Abbey and contents transferred to the National Trust by the Treasury in lieu of CTT in 1985 with an endowment provided by the NHMF.
