Summary
Pine, relief panel with the flaying of Marsyas, Sir John Gardner Wilkinson, FRS (1797-1875). The reverse inscribed in pen and ink, 'Composition from two Ancient sculptures/ representing the flaying of Marsyas and/ showing the position of the Phrygian slave/ commonly called "the Grinder""./ One of these was on a sarcophagus at S.Paolo/ fuori le mura at Rome (destroyed by fire in 1823)/ the other on a monument at Arles, and this composition combines the principal features of the two. Provenance
Transferred to the National Trust by the Treasury in lieu of CTT in 1985 with an endowment provided by the NHMF.
