Summary
One of a pair of oak pole screens, in the manner of Gillow & Co. Lancaster & London, circa 1820. Each with a rectangular frame carved with scroll re-entrant corners and anthemions and with conforming applied crest and apron. The brass pole joining a turned column and triform plinth, raised on scrolled feet. One screen with an embroidered panel depicting the Harpur Crewe family crests within a banner bearing the motto 'Degeneranti Genus Opprobrium'. The other screen embroidered with the Harpur Crewe coat of arms.
Provenance
Calke Abbey and contents transferred to the National Trust by the Treasury in lieu of CTT in 1985 with an endowment provided by the NHMF.
