Summary
One of a set of six maple and cane chairs, by Jackson & Graham, 37-38 Oxford St, London, cabinet makers and upholsterers, circa 1840. Each with shaped backs with leaf carved horizontal stretchers, the caned seat raised on turned fore legs and raked back legs, tied by stretchers, loose seat cover.
Full description
Jackson & Graham were furniture makers whose business was established at 37 Oxford St by June 1836. An invoice dated 14 June 1836 in the Museum of London is for a French polished rosewood sofa at £19 and other items. A trade card of this early period, giving the address as 37 and 38 Oxford St shows an engraving of the exterior of their premises and states their trade as ‘Upholsterers, Carpet Manufacturers, Furniture Printers and Interior Decorators’. Provenance
Calke Abbey and contents transferred to the National Trust by the Treasury in lieu of CTT in 1985 with an endowment provided by the NHMF.
