Summary
One of a set of eight scagliola pedestals, English, probably late 19th century. Each imitating yellow Sienna marble, with a moulded socle and ebonised pine square plinth base.
Full description
Scagliola, from the Italian ‘scaglia’ meaning ‘chips’, is a composite substance which imitates the appearance of marble and semi-precious stone. It is made from selenite, glue and natural pigment.
Provenance
Calke Abbey and contents transferred to the National Trust by the Treasury in lieu of CTT in 1985 with an endowment provided by the NHMF.
