Summary
An oak display case, possibly by Thomas Marriot, Ticknall, Derbyshire, circa 1870. The ase contains a collection of Egyptian curiosities and an accompanying note reads 'Collection of Egyptian Curiosities, brought by me from Egypt and Nubia in 1869 and 70 Vauncey Harpur Crewe. May 5th 1870'With an egg and dart carved edge with a hinged lid and glass panel top and sides.
Full description
There are six display cases in the Saloon at Calke (NT 287403) which were made by Thomas Marriot of Ticknall, the estate joiner, in 1859 to display a collection of shells, fossils and polished stones together with varied curiosities and minerals. The carving on this display case is comparable and may be by the same hand. The case contains a collection of Egyptian curiosities and an accompanying note reads 'Collection of Egyptian Curiosities, brought by me from Egypt and Nubia in 1869 and 70, Vauncey Harpur Crewe. Calke Abbey and contents transferred to the National Trust by the Treasury in lieu of CTT in 1985 with an endowment provided by the NHMF.
