Summary
Engraving, The Castle of Ischia (after Clarkson Stanfield) by Edward Goodall (1795–London 1870). Published by the Art Union of London, 1844. Entitled 'The Castle of Ischia', from a picture owned by George Knott. The romantic castle is built on top of a high rock rising out of the sea. On the causeway several soldiers walk or stand. There are boats in the rough sea. The print was made after Clarkson Stanfield's painting: 'Castello d'Ischia, from the Mole, Italy', exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1841(9), and acquired by Sunderland Museum in 1981 with the note: "On Monday, December 24th, 1838, it blew a heavy gale from the south-west; several small craft from Procida and Baiae, moored without the mole that connects the castle with the town of Ischia, parted from their felucca - was entirely wrecked, and it was with difficulty the crew were saved.
