Summary
Print, engraving, The Gateway of Kirkham Priory, Yorkshire (after William Richardson) by George Hawkins, the younger (1819 – Camden Town 1852). Entitled 'The Gateway of Kirkham Priory' published in 1848 by R. Sunter. The gateway has a moulded arch with two Gothic windows in the wall above and several carved figures and armorial shields. Torn in places. The Priory is situated on the banks of the River Dewent, at Kirkham, North Yorkshire. It was founded as an Augustinian Priory in 1120 by Walter 'Espec, lord of nearby Helmsley who also built Rievauls Abbey. The priory was surrendered in 8 December 1539 during the Dissolution of the Monasteries.
