Watercolour on paper (over a photograph), Sir John Harpur Crewe, 9th Bt. (1824-1886) by R. H. (fl.1887) A full-length watercolour portrait of Sir John inscribed 'R.H. 1887 / Dickinsons'. He has long grey side whiskers and a black top hat. He wears a blue coat, light coloured trousers and carries a walking stick. He stands on the balcony at the front of Calke Abbey, the park beyond. In a gilt metal frame mounted in a mahogany box, lined with crimson velvet with a glass front. The guidebook catalogues this portrait as an overpainted photograph.
Provenance
Transferred to the National Trust by the Treasury in lieu of CTT in 1985 with an endowment provided by the NHMF.
