Summary
Pencil and watercolour onpaper, Jane Whittaker, Lady Crewe (1799-1881) by Octavius Oakley (Bermondsey 1800 – London 1867). Lady Jane is seated in one of the Drawing Room chairs, she wears a blue long sleeved dress with a white pointed lace collar. Her hair hangs in ringlets round her face. Curtains behind. An inscription on the back reads, 'Jane, Lady crewe, wife of Sir George H. Crewe, 8th Bart.' (inventory card) Jane Whitaker, the daughter of a Norfolk parson, Thomas Whitaker, married Sir George Crewe in 1820. This picture probably date form that time. (House Guide, last revised 1996) In a giltwood and gesso frame. Moulded with small floral sprays, scroll and shell design in the corners.
