Summary
Pencil and watercolour on paper, Sir John Harpur Crewe, 9th Bt. (1824-1886) as a child by Octavius Oakley (Bermondsey 1800 – London 1867). Sir John, wearing a pale yellow dress with a green sash, is seated, reading a book which is resting on a stool. Red curtains and pillars behind. Inscription on the back reads 'Sir J. Harpur Crewe Bart, 9th'. (Inventory card) Probably drawn in 1826. (House Guide, last revised 1996) In a giltwood and gesso frame. Moulded with small floral sprays, scroll and star design in the corners.
