Summary
Print, coloured aquatint, The High Mettled Racer - In Training (after Henry Thomas Alken) by Henry Thomas Alken (London 1785 – London 1851) and Thomas Sutherland (1785-1838). One of a set of six coloured aquatints called 'The High Mettled Racer' by H. Alken and T. Sutherland after H. Alken. They are a series of plates describing the life and fortunes of a race horse from birth to death. Published by S. [and] J. Fuller. London, March 1st 1821. 'In Training'. The chestnut racer stands in the centre of the picture attached to a rope ahich a gentleman in a long blue coat is holding on the right. With him are two more gentlemen, one standing and one on a horse. Coming in from the left-hand side of the picture are two more top hatted gentlemen on horseback. Behind are hills with horses racing across. Wide margin. Plate 2.
