Summary
Print, etching, A View of Hopping Mill Ware (after Thomas Smith of Derby) by François Vivarès (Montpellier 1709 –London 1780). Seventh of a collection of seven 18th century engravings. Views of seats. (g) A View of Hopping Mill Ware by F. Vivares after a painting by T. Smith. In the distance stands a rocky outcrop, the centre of the picture being taken up by a waterfall. In the foreground is a man fishing, figures in a boat to the right and figures standing on the bank to the left. The inscription reads, 'A View of Hopping Mill Ware, on ye river Derwent, four miles north of Derby, belonging to his Grace the Duke of Devonshire to whom this plate is inscribed by his Grace's most dutiful,...T. Smith'. Published Aug. 25th 1745. Narrow margin.
