Summary
Print, engraving, The Frown (after Thomas Webster RA) by William Dean Taylor (1794-1857). Published by the Art Union of London, 1850. A row of eight children seated on a bench all have doleful expressions, some sullenly hiding behing their books and one wearing a dunces hat. An inscription below reads, 'Full well the busy whisper circling round conveyed the dismal tidings when he frowned'. See CAL/D/171a,b and CAL/F/171d. Back has a printed mark; 'Henry Moseley/Carver Gilder/Derby. The original is in the Guildhall Art Gallery, London.
