Summary
A Beja shield, Eastern Desert, c. 1881-99. A traditional shield made by the Beja people of the Eastern Desert region, the shield made from hippopotamus, rhinoceros or elephant hide. The shield is of a circular shape with a central domed boss and two circular notches cut out at opposite edges. A hide handle is fitted with metal rivets across the back of the boss.
