Full description
Palazzo (……..) 30T. (…). 47 My dear William, What an unsatisfactory pest we have here. – On the 25T. London papers of the 15T. with the important information of the stoppage of (……) Hook who received two days afterwards we had your few lines ( forwarding a letter from Blanche) not dated later than the 11T . We are still without anything later than the 15T. so that we are quite in the dark as to the consequences of what seems to be the most influential of any of the sad events of the (….) kind that have yet occurred.- We have here a Mr. (……) the head of the house, according to Mr. (…….) report, who (…….) have the management of some of the large (…….) estate – to this (………) I was introduced on Saturday after (……..) Hook (…….) was the great subject of conversation. - He was very communicative – so much so that people of his (……. …….) are that, tho he was very clear in his statements as far as I could catch them with my deaf ear, I did not feel quite sure that he was quite the (…..) man which I presume the (……..) in question must be – at all counts if not (…..) now the Lawyer who has the management of the many unfortunate peoples affairs wich soon become so – This 5th log & I will now tell you what will be no news to you when this reaches you that in the opinion of this Gentleman this stoppage will be (……..) with much (…..) consequences than any that have taken place. – It seems the course Page 2 of their (……..) was to make advances to (…….) not only on actual but also on expected shipments (shipments crossed out) arrivals of produce – upon the (…..) operation he underwent on a pretty close examination both from Mr (…..) & myself as we both questioned the security of engagements (…..) in Mr (…) described merely an understanding , to place in the Brokers hand Bills Lading to arrive. - These engagements he says are always respected excepting that they are not such as money can be seized upon in the general money market ^ was quite unacceptable, they make the Broker safe & that being the case the sphere of his transactions on banking money to Importers must be greatly increased - The stoppage of this house as far as I could understand will not be a matter of surprise in Mincing :Lane.- It was helped however that the restriction as to discount having been removed from the Bank it would have been carried through.- I have as you know from the beginning had (….) fears for my fellow Merchants in the West India trade when hope in the deplorable state to which out (…..) Colonies have been bought and the free trade experimentalists must have exhausted many a noble fortune. - Should any of these houses have been (…..) as containing many of the East Indies & Mauritius,
