Full description
Letter headed; Bp’s Palace Calcutta April 28th 1838 Revd & dear Sir R Thompson has done me the favour to call, & has left me a copy of your most handsome & beautifully printed [----- to ---], which I can assure you I have had sincere pleasure in recommending, after having attentively read a considerable number of pages in different parts [---] a specimen. I heartily wish it success; though in India it is [-----] how little sale there is even for the first-rate books – the Society is so small & fluctuating, & transient – & a large portion are military, whose pay is inconsiderable & who are marched about from one end of India to another. I trust you will be encouraged, Dear Sir, to go on now with the O.T. as you have completed the N. Your devotional [---] of reflections, like those of [----] are much adapted for our [----], scattered Christian population. We are making some progress in the great task of converting India – but the first Chapter of the Romans & the 2nd to the Ephesians may explain why our advances are so slow. We doubt instruments, we want [----] ; but we want above all large [------] of the Holy Spirit to qualify & bless the instruments. [---] we already possess. Idolatry and false religion are rooted in every depraved aversion to the loss character, worship & service of the one true God. Send us out money, [-----], [-----], Missionaries we pray you – but above all PRAY for India. I beg the benefit of your prayers for myself also. Yours affectionately Calcutta Address on one side of folded letter with various postmarks; (INDIA/ALEXANDRIA/MALTA/ LONDON 9 JUL 1838) Bombay Steamer The Revd Mr Girdlestone [---] 8 [----] Dudley London To care of W Waghorn
