Full description
London 18/9/32 My dear Miss,…… I cannot delay thanking you for your kind letter received this morning – We have indeed been quite overwhelmed at the calamity which has befallen us. It came upon us so suddenly and unexpectedly, we ought to have been more prepared at his great age – but somehow we were not – The Duke was uncommonly hale on Monday, he complained of not feeling well in the morning on Tuesday, sent for the Apothecary , was soon after seized with a fit and from that time (10th March) till he expired at ¼ past 3, has never spoken and hardly shewed any sign of consciousness, but he does not seem to have suffered at all, which is a great comfort. Papa is as you may imagine much cast down and we must expect him to grieve long for one whom he so reverenced and with whom he has been intimately connected 44 years. Mama too is much affected. We hope to be able to go out of town soon, we had settled to go to St.Leonards –on-Sea last Wednesday, but of course this sad event upset our plans. My sister sends her kind regards to you and again thanking you for your kind sympathy. Believe me yours very sincerely, Charlotte E Somerset. The Honourable Miss Somerset on the Death of the Duke of Wellington.
