Summary
Sepia photograph of seated cleric. Letter on House of Lords paper. Letter from Dublin dated 14 Feb. 63.
Full description
At bottom left, a letter on House of Lords embossed paper. 26 Pall Mall May 14 1861 My Dear Sir John Patteson I have been allowed to see the letter in which you take leave of your friends at Nobody’s(?) and I hope you will not think it an intrusion if my full heart pours itself forth in an expression of affectionate sympathy and loving admiration of you. May God in prayer for myself of His exceeding mercy permit me when death is near to look forward to it with such calm expectancy and to look back on life with as grateful comfort as for the accomplishment of all it great delights(?). For yourself, may God grant you(?), and it will be my constant prayer for you His unspeakable support through whatever He may order for you here and an abundant entrance hereafter into the Kingdom of his Dear Son. I am most truly yours Oxon At bottom right, a second letter on cream paper. A few indecipherable words added at top of page in different handwriting to the main letter. Dublin 14 Feb –63 My Dear Hawkins Dr Radice, an Italian professor here is very strongly recommended to me and wishes, in visiting Oxford, to see some MSS. In the Bodleian. I shall be glad if you can give him every aid. Ever yours Rd Whateley
