Summary
One of eight carved and painted oak plaques depicting different coats of arms which together formed the back panel of a settle. The central shield stands on a background of plain linen fold carving supported by three staves with gold trefoil oak leaf terminals. The flat plain shield bears the black and red painted handheld Battle Axes crest above the painted gold motto in Gothic script reads; Tenax propositi. The reverse has a quatrefoil carving with central shield bearing the painted gold motto; Patriae fumus / igne alieno / luculentior. The bottom edge is marked in pencil; 1. Inside the fitted drawer (NT27032.3).
