Summary
Bodycolour on paper, A Goat, with the Colosseum beyond, by Serafino Cesaretti (fl. 19th century), signed on the backing: 'Serafino Cesaretti fece a Roma 1822/ recapito da Giovann Scudellari/ via condotti' and with a quotation from Juvenal. A white goat with horns and a beard nibbles at a vine on a tree. The pair of cymbals and thyrsus on the ground associate the goat with Bacchus. The Colosseum is seen in the distance.
Provenance
Anon, sale, Sotheby's 21 January 1959 (Lot 19) purchased by Brinsley Ford and by descent to Augustine Ford. Accepted under the Cultural Gifts Scheme by HM Government from Augustine Ford and allocated to the National Trust for Osterley, 2023.
