Summary
A painted tester bed, made in 1814 by Chipchase & Proctor (fl.1809-1818) of Albermarle Street, London. The tested edged with pole cornices, painted in imitation of bamboo, the cornice at the foot with open scroll ends. The footposts with broadening upper shafts formed of cluster columns and ring-turnings edging an ovoid knop painted with basket-weave, the lower shafts square-section and formed of cluster columns, raised on painted turned feet. The bamboo indicated by lines and dots against an ochre ground. The hangings later: the full-length headboard fitted with pleated oatmeal silk; the underside of the tester hung with scalloped oatmeal floral cotton with a pink, beige and brown fringe.
Provenance
Commissioned for the 'India Bed room' at Stoneleigh Abbey, Warwickshire in 1814; by descent to Rupert William Dudley, 4th Baron Leigh (1908-1979) by whom probably sold to Hotspur Ltd.,1959; Purchased for Basildon Park, Berkshire by Lord and Lady Iliffe and gifted to the National Trust with the Basildon Park Estate in 1978.
