Summary
A chair, mahogany, English, after a design by Thomas Chippendale (1718-1779), and possibly by Gillows of Lancaster or Waring & Gillow. One of a set of fourteen chairs comprising two open armchairs and twelve standard chairs. Having a serpentine toprail terminating at either end with an acanthus clasp and carved to the centre with a palmette between trailing leaves. The splat formed as three interlocking lancet arches pierced with foils and joined at the middle by pairs of ribands forming crosses, and with a pair of ribbed trefoils below. The rear uprights reeded. The drop-in seat, covered with green velvet, in moulded seat rails. Raised to the front on a pair of chamfered square-section reeded legs headed by pierced spandrels and to the rear on a pair of outswept legs set at a rake, all on brass castors.
