Summary
Silver medal commemorating Thomas Carlyle's 80th birthday by George T. Morgan (1845-1925), after a design by Sir Joseph Edgar Boehm (1834-1890). Obverse has a portrait of Carlyle by Boehm, signed on the truncation 'BOEHM' and inscribed around the perimeter 'THOMAS CARLYLE'. The medal is signed 'G. MORGAN. SC.' at the centre bottom. The reverse is inscribed with the date of Carlyle's 80th birthday 'IN COMMEMORATION DECEMBER 4 1875'. Medal in silver, which accompanied the Address presented on Carlyle's 80th birthday. Provenance
Possibly the medal presented to Thomas Carlyle's niece, Miss Mary Carlyle Aitken in 1875. Minutes of the Carlyle's House Memorial Committee for Wednesday 4th December 1895 lists the medal as being presented to the Trust by Alexander Carlyle for display in the house. Transferred to the National Trust in 1936.
