Summary
Bronze portrait relief with profile head of Thomas Carlyle (1795-1881) after a model by Thomas Woolner (1825-1892). Inscribed with the date 1857 at left, and a monogram, ATF (?) at bottom edge. 'CARLYLE' crudely scratched into reverse. Identical portrait type to the cameo (NT 263871) and the cast iron portrait of Carlyle by Thomas Woolner (NT 263804), after Woolner’s portrait medallion made in 1855.
