Summary
A mahogany two-tier corner hanging bracket, English, 19th century, of rectangular form with one curved end, both tiers with a raised scalloped edge, the tiers supported by four turned columns.
Provenance
By descent, then This bracket, a pair of chinoiserie brackets (NT 263509.1 & .2), and a single chinoiserie bracket (NT 263519) were included as one lot at auction in 1932. Sotheby & Co, London, 'Catalogue of Printed Books.....Furniture, &c. Formerly The Property of Thomas Carlyle, 1795-1881, and now sold by order of the executors of his nephew, Alexander Carlyle', 13th & 14th June 1932, lot 236 - 'A set of three Chinese Corner Hanging brackets, carved with fabulous birds and bats amidst cloud bands, 10 in. to 7.1/2 in.; and a mahogany Bracket with escalloped gallery, 1 ft. 9in. wide'. Purchased (possibly by Mr. Reginald Blunt) and presented to the Carlyle's House Memorial Trust, circa 1932. The National Trust took over the management of Carlyle's House in 1936.
