Summary
A walnut and beadwork footstool, English, mid-19th century, beadwork picture of a flower on a blue background to the circular top and walnut veneer to the sides, on three tapering feet. Paper label to the underside, inscribed in black 'Bead footstool which belonged to Mrs. JW. Carlyle/Presented by /Mrs. Lucy Hill/1958'.
Provenance
By descent, then Sotheby & Co., London, 'Catalogue of Printed Books....Furniture, &c. formerly The Property of Thomas Carlyle, 1795-1881, And now sold by order of the executors of his nephew, Alexander Carlyle', 13 & 14 June 1932, lot 262 Purchased by Mrs. Lucy Hill in 1932 and presented to the National Trust in 1958. The National Trust took over the management of Carlyle's House in 1936.
