Summary
A beech daybed, English, mid-19th century, re-upholstered (1967) to the front and side in red velvet, the loose squab cushion similarly upholstered, with red wool serge to the rear, the scrolled headrest trimmed with red passementerie, joined by a three-quarter length undulating back. On turned legs with brass castors
Provenance
This is probably the red sofa referred to in 'The Homes and Haunts of Thomas Carlyle' published by the London: Westminster Gazette in 1895, p. 126, 'Against the wall is his old red sofa, rather hard, but room enough, which used to be kept at the foot of his bed upstairs.' This is accompanied by an illustration which bears a strong resemblance to this daybed. The foot of the daybed can also be seen in a postcard depicting Thomas Carlyle's bedroom commissioned by the Carlyle's House Memorial Trust, circa 1900.
