Summary
A Victorian silver presentation trowel with turned wooden handle having silver decoration. Attached to blade with elaborately scrolled fitting. Blade is heart-shaped, engraved with commemorative inscriptions and ring of small circles around edge. Inscription on front reads; KEBLE COLLEGE / CHAPEL / S. MARKS. DAY / WILLIAM GIBBS OF TYNTESFIELD / A.D. / 1873. Inscription on back reads; TYNTESFIELD / CHAPEL / 4th AUGUST, 1873 / WILLIAM GIBBS OF TYNTESFIELD. Alongside this a further inscription reads; ST. MICHAEL'S HOME / CHEDDAR / 24th OCTR. 1876 / MRS WILLIAM GIBBS. Below these two inscriptions a further inscription reads; KEBLE COLLEGE / HALL (and) LIBRARY / ANTONY GIBBS OF TYNTESFIELD / HENRY MARTIN GIBBS OF BARROW COURT / S.MARKS DAY / A.D. 1876. Hallmarked on the underside for Thomas Peard, 1872. Used to lay the foundations of Keble College Chapel, Oxford, as well as St Michael's Free Home for Consumptives.
