Caption
The Reverend Walter Halliday inherited a significant fortune from his father which he used to create a country estate for himself and become a land owner of great social standing. He sought not only to improve his own lifestyle but also to improve the lives of the poor in Countisbury. He set about 'bringing modernity' to the local population providing employment on his estate and establishing Poor Houses for the destitute of the area.
Summary
Plaster copy of a marble bust of Reverend William H Halliday, now at Glenthorne, by (signed) L McDonald, Rome, 1845. The copy was made by Herbert Read, St Siwell Art Works, Exeter, in 1975 for £160, for the NT but with Mr Halliday's consent. (On plinth L/WAT/F/12)
